SUKABUMI, HEAVEN OF SEAFOOD

Sukabumi is part of a district in Tatar Sunda, West Java Province. The regency’s capital is Palabuhan Ratu. The district bordered with Bogor Regency in the north, Cianjur Re­gency in the east, the Indian Ocean in the south, and Lebak in the west and is the second largest district in Java after Banyuwangi in East Java Province.

The Sanghyang inscriptions found in Cibadak clearly states that the area around Sukabumi Regen­cy was inhabited by human since the 9th century AD. The inscrip­tion mentions the prohibition from ruler, the Kingdom of Sunda locals was to catch fish. There is also other historical relic namely Pasir Datar inscription which was found in Ci­cantayan but has not yet translated and so that the content remains un­known.

The government of Special Re­gion of West Java, has targetted the West Java Provincial Government has targeted the development of in­ternational fishing ports in Pelabu­han Ratu Sukabumi which is sched­uled to start next year.

As is known that international fishing ports in Pelabuhan Ratu has lain dormant for three years. Cur­rently, Pelabuhan Ratu has its own status which is as a fishing port Nu­santara (PPN), and will become the Ocean Fishery Port (PPS). The ulti­matum was already submitted to the relevant local government so that the construction is over soon real­ized, because otherwise the grant funding from abroad will be attract­ed by the headquarter and will be transferred to the development of other ports, “ said a staff who did not want his name to be exposed.

Besides not having International certifates, export activities in West Java still rely on access via the port of Semarang, Surabaya and Jakarta. In fact, if the export is done directly from the West Java Post, it will boost the trade as they are efficient and in­crease local revenue (PAD).

On her visit to the Sukabumi Regency recently, Dr. Ita Junita Puspadewi met some officials from Bappeda and representative from the office of Marine and Fisheries, and optimistic that the plan will be made by the provincial government that will coordinate with the district / city government who manage 84 PPI. While other local governments will only be given the authority to manage the fishery auction place.

Among the fishermen in West Java Province, the development of international harbor must be in ac­cordance with the spatial shared, as it was agreed by the Presidium of West Java SNI. All parties expect will emphasize the human side as well as the participatory role of lo­cal communities, and the position of fishermen so as not inhibited by regulations that make it difficult if the port was realized and with other cities/ regency in West Java and shall be the biggest place for marine ac­tivity & fisheries.
